Closer to the Dream
The colonists had made much progress. Within seven months, they organized around Mr. George E. Blalock’s plan, legally incorporated and developed governing documents. Among themselves they had elected corporation leaders, invested their money in a stock corporation and collectively purchased a large tract of land in Tamaulipas, Mexico. Their transportation committee had negotiated for the best travel fares and arrangements. Colony members had settled their affairs in Greer County and disposed of property that they were not bringing with them to Mexico.
Now they were ready to set out on a long journey to begin their life in a foreign country one where the majority of the people spoke a language different from their own and one that had diverse customs, inhabitants, landscapes, plants, and animals. A country, they hoped, where they would be able to fulfill their dreams.
