BLALOCK HAS A BIG SCHEME

He talks of Starting an American

Colony in the Heart of Old Mexico

George E. Blalock, who returned last week from an extensive prospecting tour in Old Mexico, is delighted with that country and tells fabulous tales of the products, prospects, and advantages offered. He says they raise the finest cotton and the largest crops per acre of the world. He says he met a man there, an American, who had a cotton "patch" of 50,000 acres, the product from which had been 100,000 bales, but last year the season was not just right and his crop was only 75,000 bales. He says everything he has in Greer county is for sale and he is going to Mexico to locate.

He has secured an option on an estate north of the City of Mexico, and near the Mexican Central railway. The tract contains 111,120 acres and the price is $50,000. This price includes all improvements on the property among which are a distillery, a sugar mill, tan yard, a fifty-acre coffee grove, nine acres of bananas, and hundreds of India rubber trees. Besides this there are seven towns of peons, or about seventy-five families which go with the property. They are a lower class of natives who are about the same as natives except that when they work for the master he must pay them in advance at the rate of twenty-five cents a day. If the peon fails to do his master's bidding the master reports him to the authorities and he is hustled off into the Mexican army and his home and friends know him no more.

Mr. Blalock's idea is to get up a colony of fifty families buy this big tract of land, allot to each head of a family two hundred acres for a farm and either hold the balance in common, or in a stock company or sell it to persons who want to become members of the colony. Mr. Blalock is quite enthusiastic over the scheme and says it is the ideal country of earth to live in as to climate, soil, etc.
