RATE QUESTION

Joe Miller and Geo. Moore are in Ft. Worth Figuring with Railroads on Rates

BIDS SLOW COMING IN

The Roads as a Rule Have Been Slow Making Their Special Offers Known Until Colonists are Ready to Start on Their Journey

Joe Miller and Geo. Moore left Xmas day for Ft. Worth to figure with the headquarters of the railroad concerns there on freight rates to Escandon, Mexico.  The rates so far submitted are entirely out of reason and it was thought best to go to headquarters for better rates, hence Miller and Moore were sent to Ft. Worth on that mission.  One offer was $26 pr thousand kelo (sic) from Eagle Pass to Escandon or throughout the route in Mexico.  A kelo is 2 1/5 pounds which rate would be an equivalent to $87.50 (gold) per car of 20,000 pounds.  Representatives of two roads are here this week to submit offers.

WANT THE JOB

Letters sent out by Secretary Sweet to Railroad Company’s for Low Rates.

BRING MANY TO MANGUM

Agents From All the Roads in This Territory Have Been to Mangum to Meet Transportation Committee and Colonists

Another meeting of the Mexico colony was had in the court room last Tuesday afternoon.  There was only a small attendance and no business of importance was done.

B.B. Talley was put in the chair and Secretary Sweet was at his post.

Many thought that some important transportation news was forthcoming but they were doomed to disappointment.

E.M. Duncan, of the Rock Island was in town, but seemingly on no business connected with the colony’s affairs.  He did not appear at the meeting at all.  However, this was explained from the fact that the colony has agreed to meet him at the court house next Tuesday at which time it is believed the transportation question will be settled.

The news of this colony’s move has reached all the railway systems of this territory and they have shown a keenness for the job of conveying them to their destination.

Among the systems who have had men on the (?) here to confer are as follows:

G.R. Hackley, representing the Mexican (railroad?) as a national.
J.C. Finch representative (over both Kansas & Texas, daily?)
E.M. Duncan (…ake City ?)
And Geo. Fir (?) Rock Island

…(?) wise nothing new from those in Mexico.

A general meeting is called for next Tuesday at the court house in Mangum at which time important business is expected to be transacted.

Geo. E. Blalock is sick at the City of Mexico which is supposed to be the prime cause for the delay in the final closing of the Colony land deal.
