MANGUM SUN MONITOR JANUARY 29, 1903

Rev. Talley, who returned last week from Old Mexico, was in Tuesday and gave us an interesting account of his experiences and the sights he saw in the land of the Montezumas.  He was in the city of Mexico holiday week and attended a Baptist Sunday School and there met a number of Americans.  He attended a meeting of the Y.M.C.A., found it well attended by bright and intelligent young fellows, all Americans and all from the northern states.  Some elderly gentleman from the north was there as a visitor and made a speech.  He was an ex-federal soldier and related some of his army experiences, and after he had finished they learned that Rev. Talley was an ex-confederate soldier and they called on him for a speech and he responded in a good natured and humorous vein that captivated them, and they treated him royally, so when William Jennings Bryan came there and lectured New Year’s night, he was the guest of the Y.M.C.A. and spoke in their hall, Rev. Talley was right in it and he hobnobbed with Bryan all the time the latter was there.  He said he told Bryan that he (Bryan) was a good talker and a jolly good fellow, but as a politician he was a failure.  Bryan slapped the old gentleman on the back and said, “well, I don’t know, but you are about right, Uncle.”
