Something like six months back Geo. E. Blalock was induced to go down into the haunts of Mexico.  After he had looked around quite a good deal he saw great possibilities for the future for energetic, straight forward men.  So on returning to old Greer, his own happy hunting ground, what he had seen was laid before a few of Greer’s best and sturdiest sons, who having all the confidence in Bro. Blalock’s ability and integrity, forthwith formed the colony, which consists of more than 100 of Greer counties best farmers, doctors, lawyers and preachers – no dancing masters, infidels or confidence men being admitted.  To give a full history of each man would take more space than we can spare, but be it said they are the men who came to Greer in its early days and tramped down the big weeds, caught the large snakes, fought the Indians and made it possible for you and us to inhabit this, one of the best countries under the sun.  They will go to Mexico and succeed as they have succeeded here and we hope their sojourn in that tropical clime may be one of happy prosperity, and when they have gotten the cream maybe we can be induced to go down and get a glass of buttermilk.  These gentlemen are capable of giving much information that we greeners need.  They can tell us where the sweet springs and the best plum thickets lay, where the wild duck haunts are found, and if you should say to any one of these more than a hundred men where in Greer county or in the great Southwest is the best place to buy stoves, hardware, barbed wire, nails, locks, hinges, flour, sugar, coffee or anything else needed to make life pleasant and agreeable, they all of them with one accord, would point with pride to the Youngsters, Slim & Shortie, Leadbetter & Garnett.  Two stores – west side and south side.  Goods the best, prices the lowest.  If you don’t believe this try it.
