FROM GEO. E. BLALOCK

He Writes a Very Interesting Letter
From Eagle Pass, Texas, Where
Their Goods Were Inspected

As I promised a line occasionally to let our friends know how we were progressing, I suppose it would be somewhat interesting to your readers to know who composed the first party of the Blalock Colony.  Only heads of families are named:  Joe Sweet, V.R. Patterson, W.W. Taylor, T.W. Medlin, F.P. Gorham, J.B. Overton, Dr. Porter, F.W. Hubbard, A.H. Olds, R.H. Gillispie, Green Parmer, Frank Turner, Simp Barrow, J.P. Turner, G.R. Moore, Ed Toland, A.A. May, W.S. Petty, Claud and Geo. E. Blalock, V.W. Garrett, Mrs. George Ingram, W.D. Elliott, D. B. Cook, C. D. White, W.W. Snell, S. Wilton, F.W. Musgrove, Frank Martin, Charley Brooks, J.L. Johnson, G.W. Crowley, S.C. Talley, Henry Daniel, John Rose, E.M. Deberry, J.E. Jackson, J.E. Thompson, C.C. Rodgers, O.V. Ogden, J.E. Shafer, Robert Martin, A.P. Cole, J.S. Briscoe, Robert Derr, J.M. Teeter, J.T. Young, W.L. Baker, F.R. Bacon, P.N. Baker, S.H. Byers, Nathan Byers, J.E. Byers, Prof. Bacon, and Joe Miller.

When noses were counted we found 204 people with said noses turned toward Mexico and, so far as learned, none have as yet taken J.R. Hatley’s advice to wish they were back in Greer county.  I suppose friend Hatley will feel sorely disappointed if they should not heed his timely and unsought advice.

Our sign, “Blalock’s Mexico Colony,” painted on each side of our sleeper, attracts much attention and only a short stop at a town or village calls forth a crowd to ask questions.  Our first stop was at San Antonio, where we arrived at 3 p.m. Sunday.  The cattle were sent to the pens and the women and children were shown the sights which included the Alamo, San Pedro Springs, Government Hill, &c.  Monday 4 p.m. found us at Eagle Pass.  Tuesday at 8 p.m. a force of custom house inspectors were turned loose on our belongings and at this 4 p.m., they are busy weighing, classifying and reloading.  Capt. Shafter is in charge and has certainly made friends by his very liberal classifications of the colonists’ goods.  All beds and bedding have by him been declared baggage and sent back to the freight car without weighing or any note made of them.

NOTES ON THE WAY
J.B. Overton looks knowing.
C.C. Rodgers can explain and give any information wanted.
Joe Miller is growing corpulent.
Green Parmer has spoken.
Old Bro. Talley talks loud when trying to talk to the Mexicans.
Geo. Moore says “I told you so.”
Claud Blalock wants to buy a girl baby.
Bob Derr is writing a history of Texas-Mexico.
John Rose offers to buss even the Mexican women, but none have accepted.
